Well, there is a scientific explanation for the unusual taste of the water which has been in a glass during the night.
In contrary to food, plain water does not contain sugar and proteins, which means that it is easily contaminated by microbes. According to Discovery News, water that has been exposed to air for some time absorbs small amounts of CO2 and a tiny portion of it is converted into carbonic acid, in fact, its chemical composition is being changed.
Namely, when the carbonic acid releases one or two protons, and coverts to a bicarbonate or carbonate, this lowers the pH of the water, and leads to an alteration of its taste.
Apart from the change in taste, this water that has been in a glass for several hours has also been exposed to bacteria, and has accumulated dust.

We are often told that we need to drink at least eight glasses of water a day. How do we derive at eight glasses? How much is a glass? Does this apply to everybody?
As a general guide, here’s a simple formula to work out the minimum amount of water you should drink a day:
Half of your body weight in pounds (lb) convert to oz, divide by 8 oz (approx. 230 ml) per glass.
Example:
Your body weight = 160 lb
Halve it = 160 / 2 = 80 lb
Convert that to oz = 80 oz
So how much is that if you split the amount into glasses of 8 oz each, to be drunk throughout the day?
80 oz / 8 = 10 glasses
This means, the heavier your body weight, the more water you will need. This is the minimum amount of water you need to drink in a day.
FACTORS THAT INFLUENCE WATER NEEDS
Exercise: The more you exercise, the more water you will need to drink to keep hydrated. On top of your minimum requirement, an extra one or two (8-oz) glasses for every hour of exercise should be sufficient.
Environment: In hot and humid weather which causes you more perspiration and urination, drink additional glasses of water to replenish loss of moisture and to keep hydrated.
Illnesses or health conditions: When there is fever, vomiting or diarrhea, your body loses water which needs to be replenished with rehydration solutions. Other health conditions like urinary tract or bladder infections may also require you to drink more.
Pregnancy or nursing mothers: For pregnant women, the above formula applies, to include the weight of her pregnancy. For nursing mothers, endeavour to drink at least two to three glasses (8-oz) more a day, on top of your minimum requirement.
HOW TO GET MORE FROM THE WATER YOU DRINK
The best time to drink your water is during the first half of the day and less nearer to bed time. To get more from the water you drink, there are some ingredients you can add that can help with your overall health:
A teaspoon of apple cider vinegar or a tablespoon of vinegar honey to a glass of water to break down fats. It also helps to keep your blood pressure in check.
Squeeze half a lemon into a glass of water to be drunk once a day. Lemon water aids digestion and waste elimination, thus controlling constipation and diarrhea. It also helps relieve heartburn, bloating and belching. It has many other health benefits and alkalizes the body.
Stir in a pinch of sea salt for every 8 oz of water you drink. Sea salt has over 80 types of natural mineral that are beneficial for our body and helps aid many health conditions, including clearing the lungs of excessive mucus and preventing muscle cramps. As Hurricane Joaquin and several other weather systems pounded the Eastern Seaboard, coastal communities have been faced with Biblical levels of rain. For some towns in South Carolina that meant 20 inches or more. Interstates were closed, cars were swept away by fast-flowing storm water, and at least six people died. As of Sunday night, flood watches were in effect from Georgia to Delaware.
Urban areas are particularly vulnerable to flash flooding. Manmade surfaces, such as asphalt, absorb much less water than dirt, and heavy rain can quickly overwhelm cities’ storm-water drainage systems. As the world continues to urbanize and the amount of the Earth covered in impervious surfaces increases, flooding is likely to become more of an issue.
This may be why a new product from a UK company has been generating so much buzz. Topmix Permeable, a fast-draining concrete, can absorb up to 1,000 liters of water per minute per square meter. Tarmac, the company that created Topmix Permeable, recently released a video of a truck pouring 4,000 liters of water onto a parking lot surface. The water is absorbed instantly, as if draining into a hidden hole.
Typically, road paving material is made of a mix of large and fine crushed stone held together by a binder. With Topmix Permeable, the fine crushed stone or sand is left out. This makes the resulting material porous enough to accept large amounts of water. A layer of Topmix Permeable concrete is installed on top of an aggregate sub-base of crushed stone, which generally sits on top of the soil. Rainwater drains through the top surface, collects in the aggregate layer, and is slowly released into the ground.
“We believe that the capacity is several times more than enough to deal with the heaviest rainfall we’ve ever experienced in the UK,” says Richard Stares, commercial director at Tarmac. The product's price, he adds, is similar to other concretes on the market.
The product can be used on roads, parking lots, walking and biking pathways, driveways and more. Tarmac says the material could help reduce flood damage, take pressure off aging storm water drainage systems and even reduce risk of water shortages by redirecting rainwater into natural aquifers. In times of extremely heavy rain, the pavement acts as a reservoir, its under-layer holding on to water and releasing it slowly at a pace the ground can handle. The system can also help filter contaminants, such as motor oil, out of water—the multiple layers of porous stone essentially act as a giant filter.
Topmix Permeable isn’t the first pavement system of this kind. Permeable paving blocks have become an increasingly popular choice for driveways and pedestrian paths. Porous asphalt has been used with success in cities, including Portland, Oregon, where some parking lanes have been paved with the material. But porous asphalt is limited: it’s too weak for high-traffic areas, it needs regular cleaning to keep grit from clogging the surface (making it not suitable for places where sand is put down during snow and ice storms), and it allows oil and other pollutants to drain into the water system.
Topmix Permeable has some of these issues. It’s not a good choice for high-traffic areas, as heavy use will eventually start breaking up the surface layer. But it’s stronger than other products on the market, Stares says, due to the process of mixing the cement and the nature of the binders (a trade secret).
“We’ve been able to get this bond so strong," Stares says. “We’ve been able to make this product that has a very high void space.”
“Void space” is the industry term for the amount of air space in a paving product. Typical permeable concretes have void space around 20 percent, while Topmix Permeable’s is as high as 35 percent.
Tarmac's material has been used in several projects already, including a parking lot. Unfortunately for us Americans, especially all those South Carolinians who saw their cars inundated on roads full of standing water, it’s not yet available in the United States.
“In an ideal world it would be nice to get this technology to other parts of the world,” Stares says. “But it’s probably some ways off.”

An oasis of greenery is floating on the Gowanus Canal in New York City, purifying the water and brightening the murky waterway.
The Gowanus Canal in New York City is known to be one of the most polluted waterways in the United States. You can imagine everyone’s surprise, then, when an oasis of greenery was spotted sprouting on the surface of the river three weeks ago.
Not only is the brackish water’s appeal improved with the improbable garden, the stream is being cleansed at the same time.
Called GrowOnUs, the project is an experiment in “floating infrastructure” that utilizes a process called phytoremediation to purify the waterway. Over thirty different kinds of plants act as sponges to clean, desalinate, and mitigate the chemicals affecting the murky canal.
The flora is grown inside the very same metal culvert piping used to carry sewage waste into the waterway, reports GoodNewsNetwork. The “test tubes” are made buoyant by environmentally sustainable construction materials like coconut fibers and bamboo.
New York company Balmori Associates, which specializes in creating eco-friendly sustainable infrastructure, is responsible for taking action on the GrowOnUs project after receiving a $20,000 grant from the Cornelia & Michael Bessie Foundation. Diana Balmori explains in the video above that three attempts had already been made to produce a sustainable patch of vegetation in the waters, but the pollution had been too much for the plants.
Now, using tougher, more conditioned greenery, the garden is thriving and benefiting the canal.
Ideally, project GrowOnUs will deliver a positive change in shoreline protection, wildlife activity, and financial income for the city. Some even hope it becomes the next wave in locally-grown food.
Said Balmori in a press release:
“We have pioneered floating landscapes, we now want to learn what can make these floating structures financially sustainable. Dr. Michael Balick at the New York Botanical Garden suggested we grow herbs, low maintenance crops.”
“In a few years NYC restaurants may be serving meals and drinks infused with herbs [and fruits] grown on one of these islands.”

The state draws up the toughest legislation yet to outlaw microbeads as marine scientists ask for an outright ban across the USA
This month, a group of scientists called for an outright ban on microbeads, arguing that we don’t have time to delay extreme measures until there is more proof for their negative impact on the environment. They did so as California became the latest state to ‘ban the bead’.
The destructive nature of microbeads is clear to anyone with common sense: these tiny pieces of plastic are commonly added to creams, scrubs, toothpastes and gels as a cheap and effective exfoliator. Ranging in size from 0.0004 to 1.24 millimeters, they are too small to be filtered out by water treatment plants. In the USA alone, over 800 trillion microbeads are washed down the drains daily. Another 8 trillion make their way into the water system from sewage treatment plants- that’s enough of these miniscule beads to cover more than 300 tennis courts, every single day. Microbeads end up in our oceans, rivers and lakes, and because they are often confused for fish eggs or other food sources, they are rapidly killing off fish, mammals and seabirds all over the world.
In a paper entitled ‘Scientific evidence supports a ban on microbeads‘, eight experts have called on the government to outlaw them, arguing that we already have proof of how the tiny pieces of plastic are devastating marine eco-systems and that time is running out: we don’t have the means to clean them up, therefore the only solution is to stop manufacturers from using them in the first place.
The state of California agrees, and earlier this month passed a bill which will prohibit “selling or offering for promotional purposes in this state a personal care product containing plastic microbeads that are used to exfoliate or cleanse in a rinse-off product.” The bad news is that the legislation doesn’t go into effect until Jan. 1, 2020.
Similar microbead bans are already in place in Illinois, Maine, New Jersey, Colorado, Indiana and Maryland, but some critics say that legislation (which only applies to personal care products) hasn’t gone far enough. Recent endorsement of a ban from leading marine scientists could mean a turning point in the fight against plastic pollution. Because manufacturers are not not going to create a unique product for California and Illinois, it stands to reason that banning microbeads in just a couple of states might force corporations to stop using them across the board. Here’s hoping…

For decades there have been stories about vehicles that could run on water, and now we can actually see one of these vehicles in action. The T Power H20 motorbike was developed in Sao Paulo, Brazil by a man named Ricardo Azevedo.
The motorcycle can travel up to 310 miles on just a liter of water, and it does not require any specific type of water. Azevedo has even demonstrated how the motorcycle works using polluted water from a nearby river.
The motorcycle works by combining a battery with a water combustion system that helps to generate electricity.
In the video demonstrating his invention, Azevedo uses clean water to power the bike and drinks it on camera to show that it is not fuel.
“The advantage of this motorcycle, which works with the hydrogen that comes from the water, is that the result that comes out of the exhaust is water vapour. This is different from gasoline, which the result is carbon monoxide,” Azevedo said.
Azevedo’s invention could entirely change the transportation industry, but he should be careful because inventors like him have been discredited and even killed in the past. The best way to keep Azevedo and his invention safe is to spread the word about it so it is more difficult for competing interests to sweep it under the rug.

Nestle has found itself more and more frequently in the glare of the California drought-shame spotlight than it would arguably care to be — though not frequently enough, apparently, for the megacorporation to have spontaneously sprouted a conscience.
Drought-shaming worked sufficiently enough for Starbucks to stop bottling water in the now-arid state entirely, uprooting its operations all the way to Pennsylvania. But Nestle simply shrugged off public outrage and then upped the ante by increasing its draw from natural springs — most notoriously in the San Bernardino National Forest — with an absurdly expired permit.
Because profit, of course. Or, perhaps more befittingly, theft. But you get the idea.
Nestle has somehow managed the most sweetheart of deals for its Arrowhead 100% Mountain Spring Water, which is ostensibly sourced from Arrowhead Springs — and which also happens to be located on public land in a national forest.
In 2013, the company drew 27 million gallons of water from 12 springs in Strawberry Canyon for the brand — apparently by employing rather impressive legerdemain — considering the permit to do so expired in 1988.
But, as Nestle will tell you, that really isn’t cause for concern since it swears it is a good steward of the land and, after all, that expired permit’s annual fee has been diligently and faithfully paid in full — all $524 of it.
And that isn’t the only water it collects. Another 51 million gallons of groundwater were drawn from the area by Nestle that same year.
There is another site the company drains for profit while California’s historic drought rages on:
Deer Canyon. Last year, Nestle drew 76 million gallons from the springs in that location, which is a sizable increase over 2013’s 56 million-gallon draw — and under circumstances just as questionable as water collection at Arrowhead.
This extensive collection of water is undoubtedly having detrimental effects on the ecosystem and its numerous endangered and threatened species, though impact studies aren’t available because they were mysteriously stopped before ever getting underway.
In fact, the review process necessary to renew Nestle’s antiquated permit met a similarly enigmatic termination: once planning stages made apparent the hefty price tag and complicated steps said review would entail, the review was simply dropped. Completely. Without any new stipulations or stricter regulations added to the expired permit that Nestle was ostensibly following anyway — though, obviously, that remains an open question.
In 2014, Nestle used roughly 705 million gallons of water in its operations in California, according to natural resource manager Larry Lawrence. That’s 2,164 acre-feet of water — enough to “irrigate 700 acres of farmland” or “fill 1,068 Olympic-sized swimming pools,” as Ian James pointed out in The Desert Sun.

Though there is no way to verify exactly how much Nestle must spend to produce a single bottle of Arrowhead spring water, the astronomical profit is undeniable fact: the most popular size of a bottle of Arrowhead 100% Mountain Spring Water (1 liter) retails for 89¢ — putting the potential profit for Nestle in the tens of billions.
Activists have called for a boycott of Nestle (#BoycottNestle) Waters and all Nestle products until they are held accountable for their actions in California.
