I’ve had friends who had serious issues associated with their menstruation when they were in high school, and they didn’t know there was a problem until they were in college.

Color and Flow

According to Dr. Alisa Vitti, holistic health counselor and functional nutritionist, it is possible to describe most period colors in three different ways: mashed frozen blueberries, strawberry jam, and cranberry juice. The color of period blood can reveal a lot about hormonal health.
Periods that are similar in texture and color to frozen blueberries may be an indicator of high estrogen levels. This would also cause a heavier cycle than normal because higher estrogen levels mean the uterus lining could be thicker than normal.
Those who shed a lighter color, similar to strawberry jam, have the opposite problem. This may be a sign that estrogen levels are low. In this case, period flow can be patchy and is often late because less estrogen means a thinner lining. It should also be noted that a light flow is also associated with birth control use for some women.
The perfect color, according to Dr. Vitti, is a nice, saturated red color like cranberry juice. In this case, flow will usually start and end on time and will not become too heavy.

If you are bleeding a little in between periods, it’s called spotting. This could mean something is wrong, so those who experience spotting should consult with a medical professional.
Here are some major causes of spotting:
  • Hormonal Imbalance – Spotting happens when progesterone and estrogen are out of balance. Dysfunctional ovaries, thyroid problems, and birth control methods can affect this balance.
  • Infection – Any infection, brought on by an STD or not, can cause spotting between periods.
  • Cancer – Cancer of the cervix, vagina, uterus, or ovaries can cause spotting. But this is rare.
  • Stress – Extreme stress can also cause a person to experience spotting.

The correct term for menstrual cramps is dysmenorrhea, and it happens to about half of the female population. The cause of dysmenorrhea is excessive amounts of prostaglandin — the hormone involved with inflammation and pain. Unfortunately, this is common.
What isn’t common is severe and disabling cramps that last for more than two days. This is a sign of endometriosis. Endometriosis is where the uterine lining is growing outside the uterus, normally in the pelvic area, instead of inside. When the lining is shed, it has nowhere to go. This is what causes the severe pain and cramps. About 10% of women suffer from endometriosis.

Ibuprofen Kills Thousands Each Year, So What Is The Alternative?

A recent Reuters’ article opened with the following stunning sentence:
“Long-term high-dose use of painkillers such as ibuprofen or diclofenac is ‘equally hazardous’ in terms of heart attack risk as use of the drug Vioxx, which was withdrawn due to its potential dangers, researchers said.”  
The 2004 Vioxx recall, as you may remember, was spurred by the nearly 30,000 excess cases of heart attacks and sudden cardiac deaths caused by the drug between 1999-2003. Despite the fact that scientific research had accumulated as early as 2000 linking Vioxx to increased heart attacks and strokes, the drug’s manufacturer Merck, and the FDA, remained silent as the death toll steadily increased.
The Reuters report focused on new research published in Lancetindicating the risk of heart attack increases as much as a third and the risk of heart failure doubles among heavier users of NSAID drugs.

INFLAMED: Our Default Bodily State

Why are so many folks taking NSAID drugs like ibuprofen anyway?
Pain and unhealthy levels of inflammation are fast becoming default bodily states in the industrialized world. While in most cases we can adjust the underlying pro-inflammatory conditions by altering our diet, and reducing stress and environmental chemical exposures, these approaches take time, discipline and energy, and sometimes we just want the pain to stop now. In those often compulsive moments we find ourselves popping an over-the-counter pill to kill the pain.
The problem with this approach is that, if we do it often enough, we may kill ourselves along with the pain…
Ibuprofen really is a perfect example of this. As mentioned above, this petrochemical-derivative has been linked to significantly increased risk of heart attack and increased cardiac and all-cause mortality(when combined with aspirin), with over two dozen serious adverse health effects, including:
  1. Anemia[1]
  2. DNA Damage[2]
  3. Hearing Loss[3]
  4. Hypertension[4]
  5. Influenza Mortality[5]
  6. Miscarriage[6]
Ibuprofen is, in fact, not unique in elevating cardiovascular disease risk and/or mortality. The entire category of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) appears to have this under-recognized dark side; cardiovascular disease and cardiac mortality score highest on the list of over 100 unintended adverse health effects associated with their use. So, what does one do? Pain is pain. Whether it happens to you, or you witness it in another (which can be worse), finding relief is a top priority.

Research on Natural Alternatives To Ibuprofen

Here is some evidence-based research on alternatives to ibuprofen, sourced from the National Library of Medicine:
  1. Ginger – A 2009 study found that ginger capsules (250 mg, four times daily) were as effective as the drugs mefenamic acid and ibuprofen for relieving pain in women associated with their menstrual cycle (primary dysmenorrhea). [7]
  2. Topical Arnica – A 2007 human study found that topical treatment with arnica was as effective as ibuprofen for hand osteoarthritis, but with lower incidence of side effects.[8]
  3. Combination: AstaxanthinGinkgo biloba and Vitamin C – A 2011 animal study found this combination to be equal to or better than ibuprofen for reducing asthma-associated respiratory inflammation.[9]
  4. Chinese Skullcap (baicalin) – A 2003 animal study found that a compound in Chinese skullcap known as baicalin was equipotent to ibuprofen in reducing pain.[10]
  5. Omega-3 fatty acids: A 2006 human study found that omega-3 fatty acids (between 1200-2400 mg daily) were as effective as ibuprofen in reducing arthritis pain, but with the added benefit of having less side effects.[11]
  6. Panax Ginseng – A 2008 animal study found that panax ginseng had analgesic and anti-inflammatory activity similar to ibuprofen, indicating its possible anti-rheumatoid arthritis properties.[12]
  7. St. John’s Wort – A 2004 animal study found that St. John’s wort was twice as effective as ibuprofen as a pain-killer.[13]
  8. Anthrocyanins from Sweet Cherries & Raspberries – A 2001 study cell study found that anthrocyanins extracted from raspberries and sweet cherries were as effective as ibuprofen and naproxen at suppressing the inflammation-associated enzyme known as cyclooxygenase-1 and 2.[14]
  9. Holy Basil – A 2000 study found that holy basil contains compounds with anti-inflammatory activity comparable to ibuprofen, naproxen and aspirin.[15]
  10. Olive Oil (oleocanthal) – a compound found within olive oil known as oleocanthal has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties similar to ibuprofen.[16]
There are, of course, hundreds of additional substances which have been studied for their pain-killing and/or anti-inflammatory effects, and there are also aromatherapeutic approaches that do not require the ingestion of anything at all, but there is also a danger here. When we think of taking an alternative pain-killer to ibuprofen, we are still thinking within the palliative, allopathic medical model: suppress the symptom, and go on about our business. It would behoove us to look deeper into what is causing our pain. And when possible, remove the cause(s). And that often requires a dramatic dietary shift away from pro-inflammatory foods, many of which most Westerners still consider absolutely delightful, e.g. wheat, dairy, nighshade vegetables and even wheat-free grains, etc.

7 Pains You Should Never Ever Ignore!




Sometimes, the pains we feel do not indicate some serious health issue, but we must take note of those symptoms which may be indicating something problematic in our body. These signs usually occur suddenly, linger longer than usual, but somehow seem different, and we need to consult the doctor, the sooner, the better.
This article will explain all pains that are considered red flags according to experts.
Severe head pain
Severe headaches can mean that you suffer from migraine. However, if it isn’t accompanied by other migraine symptoms (such as a visual aura), sudden, severe head pain, this can signal a brain aneurysm. Namely, Elsa-Grace Giardina, MD, a cardiologist and director of the Center for Women’s Health at New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center states that “a burst aneurysm can cause brain damage within minutes, so you need to call 911 immediately.”
Abdominal discomfort accompanied by gas or bloating
We all have occasional belly bloating and gasses, but if you start experiencing these symptoms almost daily for more than two or three weeks, consider it a red flag and you should schedule an appointment with your ob-gyn to discuss your symptoms.
If these symptoms are new, the worst-case scenario is ovarian cancer. In 2007, the Gynecologic Cancer Foundation released the first national consensus on early symptoms of this form of cancer: bloating, pelvic or abdominal pain, and difficulties with eating.
Back pain with tingling toes
If you have done a difficult physical activity and afterwards you feel back pain with tingling toes, anti-inflammatories should banish the pain. If they offer no help, it means you should visit an orthopedist.
Letha Griffin, MD, an orthopedist and sports medicine specialist in Atlanta warns that “One of your discs (the spongy rings that cushion the bones in your spine) could be pressing on the spinal nerve.” This condition can lead to permanent nerve damage if not treated properly.
A throbbing tooth
If the white enamel of your tooth is cracked or rotting away and it’s likely that the tooth’s nerve has become damaged, you need to patch it immediately, for bacteria in your mouth can invade the nerve.
If the tooth is already infected, it’ll require a root canal, in which the tooth’s bacteria-laden pulp is removed and replaced with plastic caulking material. Kimberly Harms, DDS, a dentist outside St. Paul, Minnesota, adds that “you definitely don’t want that breeding colony to spread throughout your body.”
Chest pain
A preventive cardiologist, D-r Arthur Agatston, MD, notes that “many patients could avoid needless worry and expense if they were to become well versed in what I think of as the subtle language of the heart. Studies have found that women experience a wider range of heart attack symptoms than men do.”
His experience taught him that there are three good indicators of a heart attack, and they can occur in either gender. They are: chest pain that doesn’t go away, varied shortness of breath, and any upper body pain that hasn’t occurred before. If you experience any of these symptoms, you should call your doctor or 911 immediately.
Leg pain with swelling
Blod clot or deep-vein thrombosis (DVT) will cause symptoms like extreme tenderness of an area of the calf and major swelling, red in color or warm to the touch. You should not try to massage the area or to try walking off the pain. If the clot breaks free, it can travel through your veins up to your lungs and cut off your oxygen supply. You just need to visit your doctor as soon as possible.
The doctor will do a CT scan or ultrasound to check for a DVT. In case of a positive diagnosis, you’ll need to take blood thinners—sometimes for up to a year—to dissolve it, says Suzanne Steinbaum, MD, director of women and heart disease for the Heart and Vascular Institute at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City.
Sharp pain in your side
If you feel as if you’re being skewered in the right side of your body, and you’re also nauseated and running a fever, you could have appendicitis. It may be an ovarian cancer, if these symptoms occur in women.
Typically these fluid-filled sacs are harmless and disappear on their own, but if one twists or ruptures, it can cause terrible pain. Both cases are resolved with an emergent surgery.
Lin Chang, MD, a gastroenterologist and co-director of the Center for Neurovisceral Sciences and Women’s Health at UCLA adds that “if you don’t remove an inflamed appendix, it can burst,” Considering the fact that it can block blood flow to the ovary within hours, a cyst also needs to be removed right away.
