Germany Becomes The First Nation To Ban ‘Chick Shredding’

A newly developed technology will allow for male chicks to be identified while still in the egg. This will allow removal of the eggs before they hatch and will end the need for industries to grind the newly hatched males, thus terminating this heartless act.

Male chicks are not even considered ‘commercially viable’ for the effort to raise them for meat, meaning that companies find ways to dispose of them in cruel methods. These male chicks are either suffocated or ground up alive soon after hatching, just the thought of grinding these innocent animals shortly after they arrive sickens me.

This act is a wretched side effect from the commercial egg industry, especially when half of all eggs hatched within the industry are male. This ethical issue is so immense that the majority of the manufacturer’s will not even talk about it openly.

If, by chance, the consumers were to be made aware of this practice the egg company’s would have a nightmare when it comes to public relations.

This is the main reason that animal rights activists have fought to raise the awareness on the situation. The sadistic conditions that these animals are kept in, most for life, are inhumane, heartless, and goes against nature.

However, the efforts put forth by activist have paid off. AnimalsAustralia has reported that Germany has devised a procedure that will allow an alternative to the mass-slaughter of male chicks that are hatched into the country’s egg industry every year.

They have developed a technology that will allow them to identify the sex of each egg before they hatch. This allows the removal of male eggs, leaving only the female eggs to hatch. This seems to be much more ethical.

Germany’s Agricultural Minister, Christian Schmidt, has advised that the process of ‘chick shredding’ be completely phased out by the year 2017. This will make Germany the first country to put an end to this cruel practice.

Perhaps Germany’s choice to remove this operation will convince other countries to do the same. Sadly, the act of chick shredding has become a standard practice among the variety of egg farming, including free range. If the egg industry is to change there must be an effort put forth and their thoughts reformed. For this to happen we must not back down, and if the industry says it’s not possible, point them towards Germany.

Kindness and love does not stop at humans, we must respect all life enough to realize that they have rights as well.

You’ll Never Believe This Dog Is The Same One Rescued Just Two Months Ago…

Exhausted and afraid of human touch, this dog experienced a remarkable transformation in just two months thanks to Animal Aid Unlimited in India.

It is not uncommon to travel in a developing country and come across a number of unhealthy, malnourished, and skittish dogs. Without proper attention and care, homeless pups often live miserable lives devoid of love and trust, as they’ve never had a reason to believe in the goodness of humanity.

But there are fortunate dogs who are rescued and are given a new lease on life, and the canine cared for in the video above is one of the lucky few.

When Indian organization Animal Aid Unlimited drove past the sad-looking dog suffering from mange in Udaipur, they knew it needed their help or would likely die. It was clear that he had received no human contact in a long time, and so they brought him to their shelter and did their best to interest him in some food.

As Bored Panda shares, Animal Aid Unlimited hooked the dog up to an IV and treated his infections. Remarkably, within ten days, his skin was fully healed. The real transformation took place in the following weeks, however.

Two months later, when the dog once again met his rescuers, he was – and remains to be – fully happy and healed! The photos below capture the remarkable and inspiring transformation.

When he was first rescued, he was “exhausted and inward.”

At first he was scared of human touch.

But with gentle care and treatment, he began to improve.

Just two months of intensive treatment transformed the once-miserable pup into a healthy and healed canine.

Animal Aid Unlimited helped him get over his anxiety.

Now, the beautiful dog is vibrant and eager to live life!

These Horrifying Aerial Photos Show What Killing Billions Of Animals Is Doing To The Planet

I’m sure I don’t have to do much to convince you that the process of producing food for a growing, and hungry, population is pretty horrifying. The worst culprits are feedlots, sometimes called CAFOs, or Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations.

In CAFOs, hundreds, if not thousands of animals are left to live in horrible conditions, breeding disease and causing terrible environmental damage. They live out their days until the day they’re slaughtered, sometimes never seeing the light of day.

According to FarmForward, 99% of farmed animals in the United States are raised this way. Billions of animals are raised for slaughter in the United States alone.

Not only that, but the leading cause of deforestation of the rainforest is the human food supply. We tear down hectares of trees for crops and livestock grazing. A football field of rainforest is torn down every single second and 100 species are lost every day as a result.

Costa Rica Plans To Shut Down Its Zoos And Free All Animals In Captivity

OK This news is too awesome not to share. In 2013, the beautifully diverse country of Costa Rica announced that it would become the first country in the world to shut down its zoos and free all captive animals. Home to 4% of all known species, the tropical nation is one of the most biodiverse locations on Earth – a major reason why tourism is its #1 industry.

Unfortunately, the country is now contractually obligated to keep the doors of its two zoos open for another ten years, after a court ruling last Friday (more info below). Still, the news of its intentions (documented in 2013) are inspiring enough to share, and activists are continuing to appeal in favor of the government’s desire to transform its zoos into cage-less bio parks.

The nation has plans to close its two government-run zoos as part of an emerging new environmental consciousness that question’s humanity’s dominion over all creatures. Like the landmark ruling in New York concerning chimpanzees, this controversial move has ignited both favorand fury.

Treehugger reports that the nation, which is also the first to completely ban hunting for sport, intends to close its only two zoos in the country, the Simon Bolivar Zoo, and the Santa Ana Conservation. By closing these two establishments, the nation seeks to convey to the world itsrespect towards wild birds, mammals, and reptiles.

Said the Environmental Minister René Castro, “We are getting rid of the cages and reinforcing the idea of interacting with biodiversity in botanical parks in a natural way.”

She continued:

“We don’t want animals in captivity or enclosed in any way unless it is to rescue or save them.”

According to sources, existing management contracts were to be terminated in 2014. Unfortunately, it was mandated last Friday that Costa Rican zoos must remain open for another ten years due to contractual obligations. When the day does come that the country is able to transform its zoos into cage-less bio parks, however, animals in captivity not able to be released into the wild will be cared for in rescue centers and wildlife sanctuaries throughout the country.
