Jackson, LA — Louisiana police are hunting a convicted killer who was accidentally set free from prison last week because of a few simple paperwork errors. 32-year-old Benjueil Johnson was released from prison, even though he was supposed to be serving a 40-year sentence for manslaughter.
After Johnson was transferred from Dixon Correctional Institute in Jackson, Louisiana to East Feliciana Parish jail, his conviction for manslaughter did not appear on his record, so he was able to post bail. He was released without anyone noticing the error.
Louisiana Department of Correction spokeswoman Pam Laborde told WAFB this was a massive mistake that should have never happened.
“We’re not trying to make excuses, it’s something that should not have happened. On [Johnson’s] rap sheet, there was information on there that should have prompted the records staff at [Dixon] who was working on his case to at least call … and say ‘Hey, I see something on it, I’m not sure what’s going on, I don’t have any paperwork on a conviction, but there may be something here, can you tell me what it’s about?‘” Laborde said.
The police didn’t actually catch on to what was happening until someone who recognized Johnson saw him on the street and called police to ask why he was not in jail.
“We got a call Monday from someone saying they saw him and asking us why he was free,” Iberville Parish Sheriff Brett Stassi said.
Johnson’s mother says her son probably doesn’t even realize he is still supposed to be in jail. “It’s not his fault, it’s not his fault. He got released. You told him he was no longer your property, he bonded out, and now you’re hunting him like a dog, like he escaped from prison or something,” Francel Johnson told WAFB.
It was reported that his mother was the one who helped bail him out of prison, and although she does not know where he is right now, she fears he will be shot and killed by police when he is found.
Evidently, inefficiencies and glitches within the over-sized and subsidized prison system accidentally allowed a violent offender to be released from prison. Meanwhile, that same system is intentionally structured so that non-violent offenders — who have never hurt anyone — continue to rot behind bars.
