NASA Has Discovered An Enormous Asteroid Rapidly Approaching Earth On Halloween Night

Here's what you need to know...

When you think about the solar system, images of planets, big and small, slowly working their way around the sun probably come to mind. It seems like a pretty peaceful place, but the solar system is actually quite chaotic. There are some 10,000 near earth objects, or NEOs, in our solar system, and we’ve only cataloged about 10% of them. There are 3,300 NEOs that are greater than 1 km in size. An object that size would wipe humanity out completely.

On October 31st, an asteroid named 2015 TB145 will fly uncomfortably close to the Earth, passing at a distance of about 1.3 lunar distances, or slightly further than the distance between the Earth and the moon. No known object will fly this close again until August of 2027, when NEO 1999 AN10 is expected to fly within 1 lunar distance.

NASA scientists aren’t entirely sure of the official trajectory of 2015 TB145, as it has an extremely erratic orbit around the sun. It’s also moving exceptionally fast at a rate of 78,000 mph, or 21 miles per second. The asteroid is about as wide as a skyscraper is tall, about 600 meters across.

The asteroid will not be observable with the naked eye, but astronomers with telescopes in the Northern hemisphere will have a good look at it.


To me, it’s absolutely insane that with all the needed technology to stop a humanity-threatening NEO, we have no plans in place to do so. We’d be the laughing stock of the galaxy if we went extinct because we didn’t think NEOs were an actual threat to us. It’s high time we have some kind of defense mechanism against these objects, don’t you think?

There's A Very Rare "Blue Moon" This Friday... So What Does That Mean?

Tomorrow there is going to be a "blue moon". Unfortunately, it's not actually blue. The term itself is very misleading. In reality, it's just like any other full moon actually. So why do they call it that you might ask?
  
In past history, a blue moon was meant to be a way to classify that it is rare. Today, however, the name is given to any full moon that is the second in a calendar month.

The lunar cycle is about 29 and a half days, but months of the year are between 28 and 31 days long. The next blue moon, by this definition, is only going to occur again on January 31, 2018 which is fairly far from now.
   
Although the concept of a "blue moon" has changed over the years, the concept that we uphold today came about when an amateur astronomer, James Hugh Pruett, wrote an article in 1946 where he defined a blue moon as any second full moon in a calendar month. This definition was incorrect according to tradition but people found it to be more acceptable and thus the term was redefined.

The Delta Aquarid Meteor Shower Peaks TONIGHT - Here's How To Watch

Look up to the sky on July 28, 2015 and you should be able to see the annual meteor shower of the Delta Aquarids.

Visible from 9:00p.m. EDT the meteor shower is best viewed from the Southern hemisphere and southern parts of the Northern hemisphere.

If you’re not in those regions, don't worry! You can also check out the two-hour livestream below from Slooh with astronomers Will Gater and Bob Berman as they discuss and answer viewers’ questions via Twitter using #SloohDeltaAquarids.

The origins of the passing Delta Aquarids have been mired in mystery since the late 1800s. Some astronomers theorize that when the Earth passes by the Comet 96P Machholz, a stream of debris causes the meteor shower. However, the comet was discovered in 1986, while the meteor shower has been spotted since the 1870s.
