Cheap merchandise comes with an expensive health cost.
The variety of things you can find at a dollar store is really astounding. From canned meals to cheap toys and pantyhose, a trip to your local Dollar Tree shows you just how versatile Chinese robot manufacturing has become.
It also shows you the dismal financial circumstances for many people in our world — that create a market for extremely cheap products.
And how safe are those products, anyway?
Not quite safe, it turns out. From electronic accessories to kitchen utensils and table covers, you would not believe the extensive list of dollar store items plagued by things like neurotoxic metal, harmful carcinogens and even fire hazards.
The issue is serious, as found in a study by HealthyStuff and the Campaign for Healthier Solutions titled A Day Late and a Dollar Short: Discount Retailers are Falling Behind on Safer Chemicals. The study mentions that of 164 dollar store products researchers tested, 81% of them contained at least one toxic chemical above healthy levels.
Toxic chemicals found include lead, polyvinyl chloride plastic and pthalates (which is known to be linked to reduced fertility, learning disabilities and birth defects).
This should be incredibly worrying to anyone with children who shops at the dollar store with the intention of saving some cash.
CEO of the Australian College of Environmental Studies, Nicole Bijlsma, said:
“A lot of these things are absorbed through ingestion and dermal exposure. Kids have a very high hand to mouth ratio and are putting things in their mouth all the time.”
Even if you don’t have small children, experts warn that cheap electrical products you’ll find at a dollar store are dangerous and a serious fire hazard.
Although the selection of items at the dollar store is a sign of how advanced manufacturing has become, you might reconsider making it your store of choice for the majority of your shopping.
