Please boycott Hormel and Applegate Farms...This horrendous treatment of innocent animals will not stand!!
While vegetarians, vegans and omnivores don’t always see eye-to-eye when it comes to food choices, there is at least one thing they all can agree upon: factory farms are a blight on this country because of the suffering they cause (and the horrid environmental impacts).
As big food corporations go, Hormel Foods is not only one of the least friendly to people in the clean, organic food movement (donating hundreds of thousands against GMO labeling), it also is one of the most pro-industrial, pro-factory farm companies out there. Hormel also recently purchased one of the biggest organic and free-range/pastured meat suppliers in North America.
Recently a new investigation conducted by the non-profit Compassion Over Killing yielded some very disturbing results — including the shocking video footage shown in the video below (warning: graphic content).
In addition to the video, the investigation uncovered the following (see the full article here from COK):
-Animals being beaten, shocked, dragged, and improperly stunned—all out of view of the few government inspectors
-Sick and injured pigs unable to walk, known as “downers,” enduring particularly egregious abuses, since they cannot walk to the kill floor
Pigs covered in feces or pus-filled abscesses being slaughtered and processed for human consumption with a USDA inspection seal of approval
-Numerous instances of improper stunning and slaughter, potentially leading to some animals entering the scalding tank while still alive
-A supervisor sleeping on the job when he should have been overseeing the stunning process to ensure workers were following protocol
Dubbed “High-Speed Slaughter Hell,” the video is frankly quite hard to watch. But it is also important viewing for anyone who is working to change the system. Already the USDA has responded by saying the treatment shown is “completely unacceptable,” and Hormel has said they will work with the USDA to “take any necessary corrective action.”
