Conventional windshield wiping fluid is one of the more toxic liquids involved in automobile upkeep because it has been made with methanol, a poisonous alcohol. Two tablespoons of it can kill a child and 2-8 ounces of it can kill an adult. Also, it’s bright color resembles that of juice, so can be dangerous to have within reach of kids (or ignorant adults). It can also leak into the ground and make its way into the air. Billions of gallons of this stuff are reportedly seeped into the environment every year.
It makes sense that someone would develop a less toxic, more eco-friendly version of the stuff.
One commercial solution is EvergreeN Windshield Washer Fluid, which is plant-based, non-toxic and biodegradable. Their summer formula has no methanol and is safe for pavement (which methanol can wreak havok on). The winter formula has a small trace of methanol, and will not freeze above -15 degrees F. It is also not flammable, unlike conventional wiper fluid.
Another company that makes methanol free fluid is Advance Petrochemicals Ltd., and you can also pick up a product by the name of Krystal Klar, which is completely biodegradable, and free of phosphate, ammonia, formalin, and methanol.
You can also make your on wiper fluid. According to an article on ForUsToBe
