Neosporin® in the most popular OTC topical antibacterial medication in America. But did you know that people who use it repeatedly can develop a contact dermatitis (like poison ivy reaction) from its use?
Neosporin® and other antibacterial ointments may be one of the factors behind the spread of an especially lethal strain of MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) called USA300.  The study is published in Emerging Infectious Diseases.
The active ingredients in neosporin® are three synthetic antibiotics : neomycin, polysporin, and bacitracin. Other ingredients include cocoa butter, cottonseed oil(likely genetically modified), olive oil, sodium pyruvate, vitamin E, and white petrolatum (crude oil).


Make Your Own Natural First Aid Ointment


This natural ointment is made with  calendula and essential oil (lavender and tea tree oil), along with coconut and olive oil. Calendula can reduce inflammation, heal the skin. Lavender essential oil has a chemically complex structure with over 150 active constituents, which explains its effectiveness at helping with everything from insect bites to rheumatism. Recently, studies have confirmed the effectiveness of lavender essential oil against different strains of bacteria and types of fungus. Tea tree oil acts as a powerful anti-bacterial and anti-viral agent.
  • ½ cup coconut oil
  • ½ cup extra virgin olive oil
  • ¼ cup dried calendula
  • 2oz beeswax
  • 2 tablespoons of honey (optional)
  • 10 drops lavender essential oil
  • 8 drops Melaleuca/Tea Tree essential oil
 
InstructionsIn a medium sauce pan, combine the olive oil, coconut oil, comfrey and melt over low heat. Cook for approximately 25 minutes, stirring frequently.
Remove the pan from the stove and strain the herbal mixture through a cheese cloth to remove the herbs.
Wash out your sauce pan and return the strained mixture to the pan. Heat on low, and stir in the honey.
Add the beeswax, and stir until beeswax in melted. Once beeswax and oils are completely melted, remove from heat, and add essential oils when the mixture has cooled a tiny bit.
Quickly pour the mixture into containers before the mixture begins to harden.
This ointment will keep in a closed jar for about a year.
