When it comes to gingivitis, you may already know that proper cleaning is important and to get rid of plaque and tartar: be sure you are brushing and flossing. You can also try gargling twice a day with a pinch of salt in a glass of lukewarm water which will reduce swelling. (1) Other things you can try in your home to fight gingivitis is aloe vera — it can soothe inflamed gums while reducing inflammation, destroying bacteria and promoting quicker healing. (1)
Natural rinses and rubs
Baking soda is another option. Just add a small quantity of water to baking soda and apply to the gums using your finger. This will help to get rid of bacteria. You could also try soaking a few peppermint leaves in water and using it as a mouth rinse. (1) Another plant-based way to soothe your gums is clove. Just take a clove and rub it gently along the gums, or place a couple of cloves near your gums and leave them there for a few moments. (1) Clove oil is another way to apply this healing remedy.
Pure juices for dental health
Since cranberry juice helps restrict the spread of bacteria, why not try that? But make sure that it’s pure cranberry juice without any added sugar. Another juicing idea for oral health is lemon juice. It helps kill bacteria and reduces inflammation. (1) Try squeezing a lemon into a glass of warm water and use as a mouthwash after brushing your teeth. (1) Be sure to rinse well afterward to avoid eroding the enamel on your teeth.
Herbs for oral health
If you are fond of herbal remedies, sage has antibacterial properties. (1) All you need is a tablespoon of sage powder, water, and a pinch of salt. (1) Store this natural solution in your refrigeration and use it to soothe inflamed and irritated gums after brushing. (1) Echinacea is another herbal option that boosts immunity and restricts bacterial infection, while easing swelling and tenderness. About 1/2 a teaspoon of Echinacea extract in warm water can be an effective solution; gargle 2 to 3 times daily. (1)
Other oils and powders
We’ve already mentioned a few options for oils and powders to use while massaging your gums, and here are a few more. Mustard Oil and a pinch of salt; but be sure to gargle and rinse with water afterwards. (1) Or you could add some cayenne powder to your toothpaste while brushing. It will help to fight bacteria and prevent gum disease. (1)
How green tea works for your oral health
Green tea controls bacteria and lowers the acidity of saliva and dental plaque. Green tea may be useful in preventing cavities, according to a recent Egypt-based study. (2) The study tested participants before and after they gave their mouths a five-minute rinse with green tea. Subjects had less bacteria and acid in their mouths and reduced gum bleeding. Other research has found that drinking green tea may prevent tooth decay as well. (2) But that’s not all! Green tea’s anti-inflammatory powers may help control periodontal (gum) disease, according to a Japanese survey of almost 1,000 men. (2) It found that the participants who drank green tea regularly had healthier gums than those who didn’t; while a German study found similar positive results in people who were asked to chew candies containing green-tea extracts. (2) Another Japanese research team found that men and women who drink 1 or more cups of green tea a day were more likely to hold onto their natural teeth. (2)
Good dietary choices help to prevent gingivitis
Be sure to get enough fiber — whole grains, beans, fruits, vegetables — in daily meals. (1) Not only will this help with boosting your fiber, it also helps strengthen your immunity and protect your body from infections. (1) More crunchy raw foods will help clean the teeth. And be sure you are consuming enough vitamins and minerals, especially vitamins B, C, and minerals like potassium, calcium, iron, zinc, and selenium. (1)
Why Vitamin B is important
Many of us have heard of Vitamin B deficiencies, but how does that affect our dental health, specifically? It’s actually one of the most common deficiencies that can affect mouth and teeth. Symptoms can include a burning sensation in the mouth/tongue, trouble swallowing, swollen tongue, and tissue of the inner cheeks can be pale and/or may break apart easily. (3)
