Susan Ingram recently set up a petition online about a subject that is very close to her heart. Her online campaign calls for a ban on ear piercing for babies and toddlers, the appeal has already accumulated over 75,000 in support of the ban.
With such traction it won’t be long until the Minister for Children, Edward Timpson will be forced to bring the issue up in UK parliament.
The petition calls for the government to set a minimum legal age requirement and states;
It is a form of child cruelty. Severe pain and fear is inflicted upon infants unnecessarily. It serves no purpose other than to satisfy the parent’s vanity. Other forms of physically harming children are illegal- this should be no different.
Comments from supporters include;
It’s child cruelty. How can it be justifiable to mutilate a baby or toddler to satisfy a parent’s vanity. I think that any piercing should have the same restrictions as tattoos. – Karin w
It’s a great shame we have to actually do this, it should be common sense not to inflict this pain on babies. – Ann CI used to run a body piercing shop with my partner and we always refused to pierce tiny tots. It used to be horrific to see parents and grand parents trapsing round with babies under 6 weeks old asking for ears to be pierced. Minium age should be 5 or even 10 and it should be the child that wants it not the parents. Children can not complete the after care required following piercing and should not be abused like this! – ceri d.
