Clean water is something that we simply cannot do without, we need it to survive, it is an essential part of life.
According to the UN, "85% of the world population lives in the driest half of the planet. 783 million people do not have access to clean water and almost 2.5 billion do not have access to adequate sanitation. 6 to 8 million people die annually from the consequences of disasters and water-related diseases." Clearly, we need to improve this fast.
A team of researchers at the Alexandria University in Egypt, have created a new invention that uses a desalination technique called pervaporation to remove salt from sea water and make it drinkable!
The best part about this invention though, is it is cheap! The membranes can be made in practically any lab using cheap materials which are usually available locally, and the vaporization doesn't require any electricity!
If that's not good enough for you, not only does this new invention change sea water into drinkable water, but it is also capable of removing dirty sewage and other toxins from it too!
"The technology implemented in the study is much better than reverse osmosis, the technology currently used in Egypt and most of the countries in the Middle East and North Africa," Helmy El-Zanfaly, a professor of water contamination at Egypt’s National Research Centre, told Scidev.net.
Their work has now been published in the journal Water Science and Technology.
