DEA Approves Ecstasy For Anxiety, MDMA Trials Begin In California

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has approved the first clinical trial of MDMA, a psychoactive drug of the substituted methylenedioxyphenethylamine and substituted amphetamine classes of drugs that are consumed primarily for their euphoric effects. The trials are being convened in an effort to treat anxiety and other psychological issues, amid a growing resurgence in therapeutic psychedelic drug usage in the medical community.

MAPS, Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies, is a California-based nonprofit research group that studies medicinal uses for psychedelics and marijuana, and is now sponsoring the study

Unlike Ecstasy or Molly, both names for MDMA sold on the street, which are usually cut and are not pure, making them often times dangerous, pure MDMA has been proven to be safe when taken in certain doses and in a controlled environment.

"MDMA can be useful in psychotherapy for people suffering from anxiety due to life-threatening illnesses because it produces in users a sense of calm, trust and confidence," the director of MAPS said.

Unlike psychedelics such as LSD and psilocybin, MDMA does not produce hallucinations which have the potential to scare people or give them a 'bad trip'.

In the trial, 18 subjects diagnosed with fatal illnesses will attend several months of the therapy, with MDMA being used in a few sessions. This will allow the researches to see how the patients respond first hand.
