When you see the word “antibacterial” on a product, what do you think? If you’re like me before I learned the truth about the word, you probably think “Hm, this must be a good thing!”
But actually, no – it’s not. In fact, it could be an indicator that the product you’re looking at contains a harmful chemical that causes liver fibrosis, cirrhosis and cancer.
The ingredient in question is known as triclosan. Triclosan is found in a variety of consumer products including toothpaste, soap, detergent and even kids’ toys.
Triclosan is currently undergoing review by the FDA due to concerns raised over its effects on both the human body and the environment.
Health Canada concluded that the use of triclosan in large amounts negatively harms the environment and it is part of their Chemical Management Plan.
The Breast Cancer Fund reports that triclosan “exerts a complex combination of estrogenic and antiestrogenic and androgenic and antiandrogenic effects.”
All those long words basically mean that triclosan causes abnormal breast development and health.
One study found that even low doses of triclosan increased the proliferation rates of human breast cancer cells, causing them to multiply more rapidly. At higher levels, it became even more toxic.
Further, as the Mayo Clinic reports, triclosan has been found to alter hormone regulation in animals, contribute to the development of antibiotic-resistant germs, and also harm the immune system.
Their report reads:
Triclosan isn’t an essential ingredient in many products. While triclosan added to toothpaste has been shown to help prevent gingivitis, there’s no evidence that antibacterial soaps and body washes containing triclosan provide any extra benefits, according to the Food and Drug Administration.
Dr. James, M. Steckelberg, who authored the report, recommends that those concerned look for products that don’t contain triclosan.
Even the mainstream media is speaking about the dangers of triclosan.
