Sippy Cups Are A Potential Breeding Ground For Mold

You might never use a zippy cup again after knowing this...

How often do you clean out your kid's sippy cup? Every day? Well, how often how do you open up and clean out the anti-spill guard? Yes, you have to clean those, I was surprised too.

Last week, mothers Marie-Pier L’Hostie and Penny Powell from Montreal, Canada, shared photos of the mold that had built up in their child’s sippy cup.

L’Hostie wrote:

"My friend Simon O’kanada wondered why his son was always sick. He broke the anti-spill top of his 'Tommee Tippee' bottle and discovered mold inside the mouthpiece. It doesn’t wash and can’t be seen unless it is broken open.
He called the company, and the lady on the phone laughed out out loud. Several moms on other groups have also discovered mold after my post in another Facebook group, so I’m sharing you. If you please, those who have these cups, pay attention! Being washed by hand or in the dishwasher, the mold will stay there!"

That is a disgusting amount of mold...

The women write that a mutual friend and dad named Simon O’kanada kept wondering why his kid was getting sick. So decided to crack open the sippy cup he was using.

Parents from their Facebook group reported the same issue, despite washing the cup numerous times.

Manufacturer Tommee Tippee responded to the controversy, adding that there are separate instructions to clean this area of the cup.

In the comments of this post, other parents shared their own photos of the mod buildup.

“Valve is not removable, the holes were clean but the inside. I advise you to check anyway! It is not bad as the other photos but it is still not clean.”

"WARNING: All the people who have been using anti-spill cups for some time THROW THEM OUT! Open your cups, remove the anti-spill guard and break it into two. Mold settles in the cap and makes children sick!! If you can, take pictures and join the other parents who have raised a complaint against the consumer service. Neither the dishwasher or washing by hand removes it!!"

The point to take away from all of this seems to be that if you haven't been cleaning the inside of the spill guard then throw the cup away and get a new one.
