To most people, this caterpillar looks like one of the most adorable creatures on the planet. It’s catlike fur almost begs to be touched, and the way caterpillars move make them almost irresistible. However, irresistible or not, this little insect should never be touched!
It is called the puss caterpillar, named after the fur mentioned above, and buried under that luxurious fur are poisonous barbs waiting to strike. It is the most poisonous caterpillar in the United states and is located in the southeastern portion of the U.S., up to Maryland and as far west as Missouri.
Although not poisonous enough to cause extreme harm, its sting is more painful than that of a wasp, jellyfish, and even some scorpions. Symptoms of being stung include intense pain that comes in waves, swelling or itchy skin, a rash with raised ridges, restlessness or anxiety, nausea or vomiting, fever, muscle cramps, swollen glands, or symptoms often associated with shock.
If you happen upon a puss caterpillar and get stung, professionals suggest removing the barbs with a piece of tape and seeking medical attention.
Luckily for us, puss caterpillars like to spend most of their time in trees or tall brush. They do venture away from time to time, but you should take extra caution when walking below tree branches or walking through tall grass.
Teach children and other adults about the dangers of this insect. It looks welcoming, but it isn’t!
