In recent years, more and more doctors have decided to vocalize their concerns that microwaves pose serious health risks to the public. In fact, microwaves were banned in Russia from 1976 to 1987.
What's all the fuss about you might ask? The primary concern here, is that microwaves use radiation to heat up food and this radiation is very likely harming our health. Authorities, however, argue that modern microwaves are perfectly safe and we have nothing to worry about.
Regardless of what you may believe, the potential for radiation leaking out of the microwave is viewed as dangerous from both sides of the fence. Because kitchen appliances are purportedly subjected to rigorous safety tests before they are approved, most of us trust them not to leak. Nonetheless, authority is far from infallible, as is any system of regulation which is generally convoluted by money.
To appease those of us who prefer to be safe rather than sorry, YouTube channel Physics Girl discovered that there is actually a way to check out how effective (or ineffective) our microwaves are at keeping radiation contained.
Her method is relatively simple; Like microwaves, cell phones give off radiation (another controversial topic). As a result, by placing our phone inside the microwave and then closing the door, we should not be able to call it since it should be impenetrable. As you can see by the featured video, this may not be the case.
So give it a try and find out if your microwave could potentially be leaking radiation. If so, perhaps it's time to unplug the appliance and consider an alternative.
