Back in January of 2015 National Geographic reported on the "unprecedented" mass death of sea birds on the West side of the United States. The report actually came shortly after National Geographic wrote a story about massive die offs "killing billions" with no perceivable consensus as to why.
Sadly, this was not an isolated incident. Reports have begun to emerge again about mass die offs that have yet to be properly explained. CNN reported just 3 months ago that "close to 8,000 birds on a 1-mile long beach" were dead.
Heather Renner, a supervisory biologist at the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge, estimates that 100,000 common murres have died in Alaska alone. A more recent report though, says the figure is about half a million. He believes this is definitely a sign that the ecosystem is in bad shape.
Although almost 190,000 murres died after the Exxon Valdez oil spill in 1989, spilling more than 1 million gallons of oil, scientists say what is taking place now is something different and far more concerning.
The birds, however, are not the only species in trouble. Sea lions are also in massive decline. Thousands are dying which appears to be the result of severe undernourishment.
Scientists are not in agreement about why these events are taking place. Some say its climate change, some say its over consumption on the part of humans which is threatening their natural diet and, in turn, existence. But what about Fukushima? This seems to me to be the most logical explanation, yet so few researchers want to mention it, aside from those who are independent. Could it be because it has the potential to destroy the entire multi billion dollar fishing industry, as well sound off alarms about how the human race is on track for what scientists are calling the first extinction event that is self induced?
