Senate Ag Committee Gives America The Finger, Rules In Favor Of Monsanto’s DARK Act

Breaking News: The Senate AG Committee gives zero F*@%$ what the majority of America wants when it comes to the food we feed our families.
This is treason.

The Senate Agricultural Committee was up bright and early this morning for a brief meeting to circumvent the people’s right to know what is in the food we are eating.

Senator Pat Roberts sponsored the treasonous bill that would prevent any kind of mandatory labeling standard. The bill also cancels out the mighty efforts of Vermont, who rocked both the Grocery Manufacturers Association and the biotech industry with last year’s vote to require mandatory labeling of certain foods made with GE technology.

The meeting today exemplifies Monsanto’s deep presence within our government. Despite the fact that nearly 100 percent of the population supports a mandatory labeling standard for foods containing GMOs, the committee sided with the biotech industry, 14-6.

For months, dedicated activists and concerned citizens have taken to phone lines and keyboards in a courageous effort to stop the DARK Act. Thousands of calls and emails have been made imploring our representation to represent the people’s demands and not take part in biotech’s attempts to deny such a basic civil right as the right to know what is in the food we are feeding our families. Activists traveled to D.C. multiple times last year to meet with senators and tangibly hand over petitions signed by thousands.

Today, our senators made it understood they couldn’t care less. A clear and concise message was declared that what we think DOES NOT MATTER. Despite the fact that our votes are what put them in the positions of power they hold today, biotech and campaign contributions matter more to our elected officials.

Senator Pat Roberts showed his biotech allegiance with his talking points straight from the Keith Ketchum School of Biotech B.S.:

In November, the FDA took several steps, based on sound science, regarding food produced from biotech plants, including issuing final guidance for manufacturers who wish to voluntarily label their products as containing ingredients from biotech or exclusively non-biotech plants.

And, more importantly, the Food and Drug Administration denied a petition that would have required the mandatory labeling of biotech foods. FDA stated that the petitioner failed to provide the evidence needed for the agency to put such a requirement in place because there is no health, safety, or nutritional difference between biotech crops and their non-biotech varieties.
Thus, it is clear that what we’re facing today is not a safety or health issue. It is a market issue.’

“It is clear that what we’re facing today is not a safety or health issue. It is a market issue,” said Chairman Roberts. “This is really a conversation about a few states dictating to every state the way food moves from farmers to consumers in the value chain. We have a responsibility to ensure that the national market can work for everyone, including farmers, manufacturers, retailers, and consumers.”

Where do we go from here?

Obviously, we do not give up. That will never be an option. Ever. I refuse to leave this fight for my children and I believe many people feel the same.

We must continue to fight, to vote with our dollars and to educate our friends and neighbors.

I also feel strongly that there is a need for immediate action against the 14 senators who voted against our right to know and the majority of their constituents. Undoubtedly, our phones calls, emails and letters were blatantly ignored. The next step will involve crowds on their doorsteps demanding answers to their obvious industry collusion. More information on these protests will be provided as soon as possible.
