New Cheerios Box Draws Attention To An Alarming Issue

Honey Nut Cheerios' mascot is missing! For a good reason...

It should be no secret by now, even to people who follow mainstream media, that we have a serious problem with a dramatic decrease in the bee population.

Although Cheerios is certainly not a brand I would recommend buying, since they use GM foods (Although they have claimed recently they will be switching to organic) they have a brilliant campaign that is beginning to go viral right now about the very serious epidemic of colony collapse disorder and bees dying off.

“Buzz is missing because there’s something serious going on with the world’s bees... With deteriorating bee colony health, bees everywhere have been disappearing by the millions and it’s time we all did something about it.”

Additionally, General Mills is giving away a free wildflower seed pack (you can request yours here) for people to plant to help the bees in their struggle.

For those who do not quite understand what the bid deal is, most of life on this planet is largely dependent on bees. About one thirds of all the foods we humans depend on for survival alone are made possible by natural pollination, which is what bees provide us with. No pollinators, no flowers basically which impacts herbivores, which then also impacts omnivores and carnivores. The ramifications are enormous.

Bees and other pollinators in northwestern Europe and North America are currently at highest risk for extinction, according to a study conducted by the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services.
