Senate Agriculture Chairman Pat Roberts (R.-Kan) introduced legislation Friday that is being dubbed The Dark Act on Steroids. The revised bill, if passed, will not only nullify Vermont’s labeling mandate but would eliminate any and all efforts for labeling of GM foods in the future.
According to The Center for Food Safety, the bill would make it ‘unlawful for states or local governments to restrict GE crops’ in any way, for any reason. The bill would block any future state or local statutes, as well as undemocratically revoke laws and regulations all across the country, including the incredible efforts of Hawaii and several Oregon counties. The bill would annihilate what is left of pathetic regulating standards and will allow agencies like the FDA to continue to sidestep safety measures and the reliance of industry-funded research will continue to run rampant. The revolving door between regulating agencies and the biotech industry will swing faster than ever before while destroying the rights of citizens to simply know what is in the food they buy.
“Friends of the Earth strongly supports mandatory GMO labeling and urges the Senate to reject the DARK Act. This bill is a desperate attempt by the junk food and chemical industries to keep Americans in the dark about what we feed our families. 93 percent of Americans want GMO labeling and this effort to try and stop the consumer demand for transparency that has shaken Big Food to its core will ultimately fail. Any member of Congress that fails to see the writing on the wall and chooses to support this antiquated and undemocratic bill will find that they are on the wrong side of history,” Friends of the Earth Food and Technology Program Director Lisa Archer stated in response to the treasonous bill.“Monsanto and the biotech industry are the ones steering this ship. The labeling of genetically engineered foods is already one of the most hotly debated issues on Capitol Hill. This unholy marriage of the Monsanto Protection Act and the DARK Act will certainly be a lightning rod,” said Colin O’Neil, director of government affairs at Center for Food Safety.
A major reason why people deserve to know if food contains GMO ingredients is that genetically modified crops require the use of glyphosate, a toxic herbicide that is now being found in rain and air samples, as well as the breast milk of nursing mothers. The Environmental Working Group analyzed more than 11,000 American churches and 3,200 elementary schools concluding these places have been ‘blanketed with glyphosate’. The World Health Organization states it is a probable carcinogen and a growing scientific consensus has linked the ubiquitous herbicide to liver and kidney damage, endocrine disruption, and neurological ailments.
The time has never been more urgent to flood inboxes and voicemails. Call and write your senators and tell them to reject this attack on the most basic civil right of them all. The majority demands the right to know! Monsanto and the biotech industry are panicking. Keep the pressure up and the power of the people will prevail.
