Your liver is one of the most important organs in your body when it comes to keeping you healthy, so it just makes sense to protect it at every opportunity.
I feel like there are thousands of different detoxes out
there, most of them are effective at detoxification, but there is often
little, if any, attention given to what to eat after OR how to spot
chemicals and toxins and avoid them in the first place. Our liver is a
great example of an organ that is vitally important and something that
we must feed properly so that it can press out those nasty toxins. We
have to also ensure that we don’t add any stressors to it in the
process.
In this blog post, I’d like to tell you what 10 of my favorite foods are and why. In the Detox with Drew Challenge we will teach you how to heal your gut and improve your overall health once and for all.
So…what does the liver do?
1. Production of bile: bile helps take waste and breaks fat down in the small intestine.
2. Production of proteins that are needed for the blood plasma.
3. Production of cholesterol and proteins that help carry fats through the body.
4. Conversion of glucose to glycogen (used for energy).
5. Regulation of amino acids.
6. Processing of hemoglobin (the liver stores iron).
7. Conversion of ammonia to urea (ammonia can be poisonous).
8. Elimination of drugs and toxins from the blood.
9. Helps in regulation of blood clotting.
10. Defends against infections and responsible for removing bacteria from the blood.
So, now that you know how important your liver is and the 10 functions – what can you do to help your liver?
What are the top 10 foods?
1) Garlic
Have you ever juiced garlic? Try it…be careful though. Just a little bit goes a long way. Garlic has the ability to activate liver enzymes that help flush toxins from your body. Surprising to me is it also has a high amounts of allicin and selenium, two natural immune boosters and liver cleansers.
2) Grapefruit
Loaded with vitamin C and antioxidants, grapefruit increases the natural cleaning processes of the liver. A small glass of grapefruit juice will boost production of detox enzymes that flush out carcinogens and other toxins.
3) Beets and Carrots
Ancient romans used to use beets as an aphrodisiac. No joke, science backs this up. Beets contain large amounts of boron, which is directly related to the production of human sex hormones. So how do beets and carrots help your liver? Beta Carotene is amazing for your liver and both have high amounts of it.
4) Green Tea
One of my favorite liver loving beverages is full of antioxidants known as catechins, a compound that can help you with liver function. It’s not only delicious, but it also has a myriad of other benefits!
5) Leafy Green Vegetables
You knew I was going to talk about these guys! I juice greens every day
and it is no wonder that when juiced, eaten raw, or even cooked how
good they can be for you. Chlorophyll is amazing for us. Greens are
mother natures way of sucking environmental toxins out of our blood
stream. They can also neutralize heavy metals, chemicals and pesticides. These cleansing foods offer a powerful protective mechanism for the liver.
There are so many different kinds of greens as well.
TIP: Rotate your greens. If you go 4 days or more of the same greens your body doesn’t absorb as much.
6) Avocados
When I moved to the Fitlife Ranch I knew there were lemons,
oranges, mint and a few other amazing plants on the property, but I
didn’t know there were about 50 avocado trees as well! O’man. It keeps
getting better…
I LOVE AVOCADOS! Like this post if you do as well. (Like button)
They are loaded with glutathione, which is one of the best things for your liver and detoxification.
7) Apples
Pectin is the natural fiber in apples –
when your body is pressing out toxins it needs some way to get them out
of your body. Apples are loaded with natural fiber and vitamins that press these harmful things out and allow your body to heal.
An apple a day keeps the doctor away right? YES!
8) Olive Oil
Make sure when you get it, it is extra virgin cold pressed oil. I wouldn’t cook on too high of a heat either. Stay below 275. It really depends on the quality of the oil. It helps the body by providing a lipid base that can suck up harmful toxins in the body. In this way, it takes some of the burden off the liver in terms of the toxic overload many of us suffer from.
9) Lemons and Limes
The juice of half a lemon in warm water first thing in the
morning is a time-honored way of starting the day and is an excellent
wake up call for the liver. The sourness of lemons triggers nerve and hormone activation
to the liver and digestive system. Very helpful for those who suffer
from sluggish bowels. Lemons assist with phase 2 detoxification, which
we discuss more in Detox with Drew. ← Link.
10) Turmeric
Not only does this herb help with beauty and skin, but it
also helps eliminate disturbances in your cells. It’s loaded with
nutrients that help your body fight against cell death and keeps your internal body integrity. I would recommend getting the fresh root to juice. It’s also great for inflammation.
