Investigation Uncovers Deception By Popular Deli Meat Company

An investigation has uncovered more deception lurking in the grocery store!

The work of Vani Hari, aka the Food Babe, has helped foster serious change in the food industry and also earned her a prominent place in the natural health movement’s consciousness, even landing her guest spots on national talk shows and news programs.

Her latest target is a company that many believed to be one of the most “natural” sources of meat in the country, at least among cold cuts: Boar’s Head.

The company charges a premium price for its cuts of meat, promising customers a product free of certain unhealthy aspects like antibiotics and preservatives. But as Hari discovered, these products are far from innocent when it comes to unhealthy ingredients, and actually contain several harmful additives that the company seems intent on hiding.

So, is Boar’s Head Deli Meat really that much better than the other brands? What Hari’s full investigation uncovered will leave you scratching your head.

GMOs in Boar’s Head? Sure Looks That Way
With a slogan of “compromise elsewhere,” Boar’s Head may seem like a worthy alternative to the processed, MSG-laden cuts of meat you’ll find at most deli counters.

But Food Babe uncovered the following questionable ingredients and processes involved in this “better for you” brand:

-Boar’s Head artificially browns some of its meats with caramel coloring, which has been linked to cancer according to recent research. To find out which types of meat see the full article here.

-When asked if their meats contain GMOs, Boar’s Head reportedly did not respond
-Their meats include likely GMO ingredients however, including beet sugar, corn-derived ingredients, and cottonseed oil

-Animals raised by the company are fed a “vegetarian grain-fed” diet, but usually this is a code word for “GMO-fed” since most animal feed is corn or soy

-Maltodextrin, which may be a hidden source of MSG and is often derived from GMO corn
-Hari also found an ingredient on the Environmental Working Group’s “Dirty Dozen” that has been linked to heart disease.

Facebook Wall Deluged With Comments

Since posting the full investigation, the Facebook wall of Boar’s Head has been deluged with comments from people demanding better standards from a company that sells “premium” cuts of deli meats.

One person asked on their Facebook wall if they sell any organic, non-GMO products, which of course is not an option. Another thanked the moderators for letting the debate continue, instead of deleting the hundreds of comments like many other companies do.

At any rate, many consumers are none too pleased with the results of the investigation, and feel cheated for paying premium prices for a less-than-stellar product.
