I guess this can save you some money and improve your oral health
I must admit, I’ve tried several over-the-counter teeth whitener.
I have also paid a dentist to whiten my teeth.
But over the years, I’ve found out that it is better to use homemade recipes for teeth whitening, as it is safer, less stressful (I am a huge crybaby at the dentist), and cheaper.
I’ve read some statistics that Americans spend more than $1.4 billion for teeth whitening products year after year.
Just think about the possibilities of what that kind of amount of money can do, if we use half of it for homemade recipes and the other half for greater good.
Now, let me introduce you to some of my recipes I’ve tried and used over the years to whiten teeth.
Baking Soda and Lemon Juice
Don’t be surprised to see several baking soda recipes here.
Baking soda is mildly abrasive, making it an ideal compound for scrubbing away surface stains. The result is a whiter shade of your teeth. It also helps balance your pH value in the mouth.
One thing to note, though, every baking soda recipe on this list should be used in moderate frequency.
As mentioned, sodium bicarbonate is abrasive, so if you use it constantly, it will do more harm than good for your teeth.
What you need for this recipe is few teaspoons of baking soda and lemon juice to form the paste.
You can use water as well, but I prefer lemon juice as it gives you that mint taste and feeling like regular toothpaste on the market.
Mix the ingredients in a fresh paste, and then brush your teeth.
Leave the paste on your teeth for at least one minute, and then rinse with water.
When you use lemon juice, you can leave the paste for a maximum time of one minute.
If you are using water, you can leave it for up to three minutes.
Baking Soda and Hydrogen Peroxide
Another baking soda recipe, this time, I’ve added hydrogen peroxide into the mix.
Hydrogen peroxide
is a great product you can use for several treatments in your home on
its own but adds baking soda, and the results are even better.Mix small amounts of both ingredients to form a paste.
Make sure you get almost equal parts of the two.
Brush your teeth as usual, and make sure to take care of the back teeth as well.
Added bonus: hydrogen peroxide works as an antibacterial agent, killing all germs in your mouth.
The result is whiter teeth, but also fresher breath as a result of bacteria-free mouth.
Strawberry and Baking Soda
Tyra Banks and Catherine Zeta-Jones have said few times that strawberries are their best friend when they need to whiten teeth.
I know you might be skeptical on first glance since unlike previous
recipes, strawberries are red and they might leave redness on your
teeth. Don’t be.The trick is strawberries are rich in vitamin C, a vitamin great for clearing up plague.
Vitamin C also carries malic acid, an enzyme that removes surface stains.
Toss in salt and baking soda, and you’ve got a great recipe for teeth whitening.
For one paste, you need up to three strawberries (depending on size), a pinch of seat salt, and half a teaspoon of baking soda.
Mash the strawberries, and then add the other ingredients to the pulp.
Apply the paste on your toothbrush and brush your teeth.
Leave the mixture on your teeth for up to five minutes, and then rinse.
Repeat the process every night for one week.
Apple Cider Vinegar
Another great home ingredient, apple cider vinegar is the king of the household home remedies.
In this case, ACV acts as a mouth gum cleaner and removes strains from your teeth. If you are a fan of coffee and cigars, ACV is great as it removes caffeine and nicotine strains.
One point to note, to see results from apple cider vinegar, it will take up to one month of constant usage.
As with other acids, be careful not to overdo it.
Another case in point: make sure to brush your teeth with regular toothpaste (whitening preferred) after applying apple cider vinegar.
Coconut Oil Rinse
When I first read of the coconut oil rinse, I thought it was crazy.
However, after I tried it out, I can guarantee you will get results as when you go to the dentist. It is an old remedy, and while it is not the most pleasant one, but it is effective.
The trick is coconut oil contains lauric acid, an acid that kills off bacteria in the plague of your teeth.
The plague makes your teeth yellow, and killing those bacteria returns the natural white color to your teeth.
For the coconut oil rinse, you need one tablespoon of coconut oil.
Every morning, before you brush your teeth, get a tablespoon of coconut oil, and then place it in your mouth.
You can push, pull and swish the oil between your teeth for 10 minutes.
Afterward, spit it out, rinse with water and brush your teeth with regular toothpaste.
Charcoal
The latest home remedy that can help you to whiten teeth I’ve heard and tried is charcoal or activated charcoal specifically.
It is a treatment you can do once per month, for 4 or 5 consecutive days. What you need is one pill of charcoal. Crush it, and then apply it to your teeth.
One thing to note, you might want to purchase a brush specifically for the charcoal.
Rinse, and then brush your teeth with regular toothpaste.
