According to Roots Up, the company responsible for the development of the dew collector, some of the greatest challenges faced in Ethiopia include recurring droughts, food insecurity, harsh living conditions, farmland scarcity and low agricultural productivity, due to pesticides and poor irrigation.
One way the comany has learned to combat the social and environmental challenges is through the construction of a dew collector that can house plant growth.
During the day, moisture that rises off the ground saturates a sheet near the top of the conical structure. At night, the tip of the structure is pulled back by ropes and the cool air condenses the moisture, which falls into the holding area as water, clean to drink and use for crops.
In addition, when it rains this thing can be used as a rainwater collector.
Roots Up will launch its first Dew Collector greenhouses in Northern Ethiopia, in coordinance with the University of Gondar.
