SeaWorld Announces They Are Ending Live Orca Shows

Seaworld, San Diego has made an announcement that it will close its live orca shows.  The state of California has ruled that they will not be allowed to breed captive orcas and a harsh public outcry has put the company under fire ever since a documentary called Blackfish was released in 2013.  The film shows the danger of holding the wild animals captive as they are a social, roaming apex predator.
Captive orcas lifespan is shorter than that of those that live free.  California’s decision to stop breeding stems from this study.
Seaworld’s new management decided to close the shows and plans to create a resort within the park that will allow people to see the animals in a more true to life, educational setting.  This is a great sign that Seaworld hears the outcry of the people.  They are also being called on to help create sea and ocean sanctuaries by critics.
Jared Goodman, PETA Foundation Director of Animal Law, had this to say, “An end to Seaworld’s tawdry circus-style shows is inevitable and necessary, but it’s captivity that denies these far-ranging orcas everything that is natural and important to them.”
People are finally seeing just how cruel it is to hold wild animals in captivity just to entertain humans.  We, as a race, tend to be selfish in the belief that animals are not deserving of rights, but a shift has happened.  With Costa Rica closing all the zoos and other countries banning wild animals in circuses, our animal brothers and sisters are getting the rights they deserve…those of freedom and choice.
