World’s largest indoor vertical farm will produce 2 million pounds of soil-free food in New Jersey

This company is producing huge numbers of indoor, organic produce for the north east United States

A multi-million dollar deal developed by AeroFarms, in partnership with property management firm RBH Group, Goldman Sachs Urban Investment Group, Prudential Financial Inc., and the City of Newark and the New Jersey Economic Development Authority, will bring the world's largest indoor, vertical farm to Newark, New Jersey.

Utilizing a technique known as "aeroponics," the plants will be grown without soil.  Instead, a nutrient-rich solution will be sprayed onto the plants, which will be rooted in a permeable micro-fleece cloth, stretched across modular planters.  No pesticides or fertilizers will be used and water will be recycled.

The 69,000 square foot converted steel factory will be capable of producing 2 million pounds of leafy green vegetables and herbs every year and will bring an estimated 78 new jobs to the city by the end of 2015.

Vertical, indoor farming is a popular new trend that can guarantee loads of food in all sorts of climates, with no fear of pests.  Often, (as in this case) LED lights are used which are more effective and exhibiting plant growth than the sun and solar panels are used to guarantee a renewable source of energy.

Even better, the "clean greens," grown without soil or pesticides significantly improve food safety and the shelf life of the produce.

This is the agriculture of the future.
