In an age where DNA structures can be mapped out and cataloged, powerful institutions are engaging in the “patent-ization” of everything—and cannabis may be next on their list.
But for Mowgli Holmes, chief scientific officer of Phylos Bioscience, the monopolization of marijuana will not happen under his watch.
Holmes is working on the Cannabis Genome Project, a bold effort to visually map out the DNA structure of this valuable plant, in turn allowing the genome to remain in the public domain and prohibiting biotech corporations like Monsanto from ever patenting it.
In Holmes’ own words, he’s doing this “basically just to piss of Monsanto.”
Those are bold words about the corporate bully notorious for bribing politicians, lobbying Washington, and brainwashing the public through mass-marketing. But Holmes sees a bigger picture, acknowledging that a thorough mapping of Cannabis’ genome could lead to breakthroughs in its medical applications.

As of now, the legalized component of the marijuana industry rakes in approximately $3 billion in the U.S. alone. Those are a lot of dollar signs for corporate giants like Monsanto to not have at least considered capitalizing on, and so for Holmes and his project, time is of the essence.
“You grow it in your own backyard, and then you take lots of it,” he said. “That’s a hard thing for people in traditional health care to understand.”
