1. Show respect to one another.
This is pretty basic. If you don’t respect your partner, they won’t stick around. Sometimes we have to earn respect and that’s perfectly fine.
2. Laugh often.
Laughing is fun and helps bring you closer together.
3. Have each others’ backs.
No matter what’s going on. You may not always agree with the endeavors your partner takes on, but have their back anyway.
4. Don’t go to bed angry.
Just work it out. Going to bed angry is a relationship killer.
5. Trust one another completely.
No matter what’s happened to you in the past, trust until you have a reason not to.
6. Leave room to grow.
As we age, we grow. I don’t think that ever changes about us, no matter how old we get.
If we suffocate one another, we tend to stifle that growth which is never good for a relationship.
7. Forgive.
Everyone messes up. It’s important to be able to forgive the people in our lives when they’ve done something wrong.
8. Leave the past in the past.
This ties in with forgive. If you keep bringing up past problems after they’ve been worked out, it shows you’re not over it and you need to work on it, not them.
9. Compliment one another.
It feels good and it’s true, of course. Tell them they look nice. Thank them for doing awesome things for you. It’s good to give compliments.
10. Encourage one another.
Encourage your partner to take on fun new projects and to pursue ideas and dreams, even if they do seem kind of crazy.
11. Speak honestly.
Honestly about your concerns, your problems, your worries, and even about the good things too. Your partner should hear what’s on your mind directly.
12. Remember the important dates.
Mark it on a calendar if you have to. First date. Deciding to be together. Buying a home. Getting married. There are lots of important anniversaries.
