VICTORY: California School District Provides 100% Organic, Non-GMO Food to Students
Wait a second....school lunches can be healthy?
School foods, as a generalization, are very unhealthy and not much like food at all, but rather food like products. It is as if the children are almost being prepped for the corporate food industry which is full of toxins, artificial sweeteners, GMO produce and the like.
A California school district is creating a massive buzz online by being the first in the nation to serve
100% organic, non-GMO meals though, which gives me hope for the future!
This is part of the Conscious Kitchen project initiative, which is changing the way we look at school food through five key principles: Fresh, Local, Organic,
Seasonal, and Non-GMO (FLOSN).
One word; Awesome!
During an interview, Judi Shils, the founder of Turning Green which is the parent organization of Conscious Kitchen explained that, “students everywhere are vulnerable to pesticide residues and unsafe
environmental toxins... Not only does this program far exceed USDA nutritional
standards, but it ties the health of our children to the health of our
planet. It’s the first program to say that fundamentally, you cannot
have one without the other.”
Reports suggest that the new produce is improving student behavior and overall performance. During the first 2 years, faculty began to visibly notice that there was a dramatic decline in the number of
disciplinary cases and also an increase in attendance!
To take it one step further, the Conscious Kitchen project doesn’t just usher in a new era in relation to what our children are eating, but it also provides them with interactive lessons on how to live sustainably by learning how to
garden and grow
food which is something that, in my opinion, should undoubtedly be taught in all schools as it teaches independence from the system!
