Another EU Nation Has Banned Planting GMO Crops

No more GMO seeds will go in the soil of this land!

On Monday, 9/21/2015, Northern Ireland became the second European Union state to ban genetically modified foods.

In August, Scotland announced that, they would be the first country to ban GMO's after the change in EU rules that allow individual member states to ban crops from being grown within their borders, even if they’re approved for production within the wider union.

Northern Ireland’s environment minister, Mark H. Durkan, told the BBC that the country has a positive image as a "green country" and that he is, "concerned that the growing of G.M. crops, which I acknowledge is controversial, could potentially damage that image."

Ireland is a small island and the presence of GMO crops could easily contaminate other crops, which is one of the primary motivations for an outright ban.

In spite of this great victory, Northern Ireland (which has more than 1 million cows, nearly 2 million sheep, and 20 million chickens) will still feed most of their livestock with imported GMO feed which is not a natural diet for the animals. Scottish Green MSP Alison Johnstone, has gone on record as stating that all livestock fed with GMO produce be labeled as such.
