Here's The Tragic Story Behind The Current Refugee Crisis in Europe

There is a complicated humanitarian crisis going on that needs our attention.

These are the desperate scenes at Greece’s border with FYR Macedonia as overwhelmed security forces made sporadic attempts to stem the flow of migrants and refugees heading northwards. Hundreds of migrants, many of them refugees from the war in Syria, succeeded in crossing the border.

Riot police set off stun grenades and hit migrants with batons but that did little to stop them passing into FYR Macedonia. Skopje had declared a state of emergency on Thursday (August 20) and sealed its southern frontier to migrants pouring in at a rate of 2,000 per day en route to Serbia then Hungary and the Europe Union's borderless Schengen zone. Things since then have changed.

Macedonia: Up to 3,000 Migrants Expected to Cross Into Country Each Day, UN Official Says Many of the migrants are refugees fleeing war in Syria, and are traveling in large groups of 300 to 400, the U.N. high commissioner for refugees said in a news briefing on Tuesday.

The influx has been called Europe’s worst refugee crisis since World War II. by TIME magazine. Thousands of refugees cross into Serbia The United Nations says the escalating numbers of refugees entering Serbia are due to Macedonia reopening its southern border with Greece.
