Reflexology is a form of alternative medicine that involves the application of pressure to the feet and hands with specific thumb and hand techniques that are connected to different parts of the body at large.
By stimulating certain areas of the feet, hands, face, ears, etc, reflexology influences the entire body. There are said to be 2,500 nerve receptors per square centimeter in the hands alone and there are nearly 15,000 nerves in your feet too, which is why reflexology is such a powerful form of natural healing and therapy.
The toes are connected to the head, the ball of the foot is connected to the chest, the arch of the foot is connected to the digestive organs, and the heel/ankles are connected to the reproductive system, amongst other things.
Using the chart above, here’s a 10 minute routine (which can be changed to longer over time if you please) to try out before bed time as a form of meditation and natural therapy;
1. Start first by gently, but firmly, pressing and some what squeezing, your feet in a way that feels comfortable for yourself (this routine has to work for you, no one else). At the end, press firmly but, again, gently on the solar plexus of your foot for 10 seconds.
2. Beneath your foot, take your thumb from the base of your hill to the middle of each toe in a gentle but firm pushing motion. Take 5 seconds on each stroke.
3. Then press the following reflex points with the your thumb or tip of one of your fingers:
- Top of each toe which is connected to the head to promote clear thought and peace of mind.
- Center of big toe to stimulate and balance hormone secretions of all major glands.
- Ball of feet, connected to chest, regulates and calms breathing.
- Base of big tie, connected to the thyroid which balances metabolism.
- Ride of toes, connected to shoulders releases tension
- Outer side of big toe to stimulate the pineal gland which is connected to our ability of dreaming and also called the third eye.
5. Lastly, run the tips of your fingers down your feet in a feathery, brushing like manner.
Reflexology ttakes the mind and body to a calm and beautiful place. It is recommended to listen to positive affirmations or meditative music during this experience, or nothing at all. Whatever suits you. It is your personal ritual!
